It has been a long break. Shame on me. I took some time off for inspiration in New York and I am writing this at our summerhouse in Finland overlooking a beautiful lake. I wrote this entry about a month ago but it got stuck in my drafts folder).
In mid June an old classmate of mine came to start his big Africa adventure in Cape Town. I took him and his travelbuddy around the winelands. Tough job And I got to shorten my winelands “must visit” list. After a short twitter poll I ended up choosing Overture and for once I wasn’t disappointed with finedining.
Overture is housed in the Hidden Valley wine estate in Stellenbosch. I have been wanting to visit for ages but it is often booked for weddings on Saturdays which are the only days we manage to venture out there. Overlooking a beautiful valley and some rugged mountains, Overture has one of the loveliest views in the Cape winelands. Except if you are visiting in the winter and they have the wind curtains down- slight disappointment but the food more than made up for it.
Like most restaurants, Overture is running a winter special. Two courses for R180. It was quite a light lunch but the food was exceptional. The winter special starter was a cauliflower soup with a blue cheese souffle. As a main we had trout with pinerings (the ones we picked in the Tokai forest!). Desserts (off their normal menu) were the highlight. The cleverly deconstructed lemon tart came with a vodka-based cocktail. The almond souffle, accompanied by a baileys re-enforcement, was also a hit. The cocktails definitely added an extra dimension to the desserts. I sadly had to skip mine as they may have added a less welcome dimension to my driving.
The open kitchen gives Overture a nice relaxed feel. If I were to have any complaints, it would be the service which was a bit nondescript and formal when we visited. It wasn’t by any means unfriendly just a bit rigid. We will definitely be going back.
